We are..

In accordance with the universal letter and spirit of Al Islam, Masjidul Waritheen is dedicated to the service of all humanity. Nevertheless, as the current extension of the historic legacy of Al-Islam in the life of the “Bilalian” (People of African descent living in the Western Hemisphere) we remain dedicated to the full realization of our G_d given potential. Masjidul Waritheen, Oakland, is one of the leading and influential communities associated with the leadership, language and legacy of Imam Mohammed(ra).

Our History

During the turbulent years of the 50s, 60s, and 70s, The Nation of Islam was at the forefront of economic and social reformation. At that time, the Nation of Islam’s Temple Number 26 B was located on the corner of 8th and Pine Street in West Oakland. During this time in 1974, the property that was to become Masjidul Waritheen, at Bond Street and 47th Avenue, was located first by Imam John Faqir (then, Minister John B. X).

After the passing of the leader of the Nation of Islam, the Hon. Elijah Muhammad, on February 25, 1975, and under the new leadership of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed (then, Chief Minister W.D. Muhammad) the new property was purchased. We moved into the Masjidul Waritheen property in November of 1975 and maintained ownership of the two parcel property, Masjidul Waritheen and the Elijah Muhammad Cultural Center, ever since.

The physical property of Masjidul Waritheen (masjid-school site) was sold in 2015. We operate Jumuah and all our services on the site of the Elijah Muhammad Cultural Center, directly across the street, while we transition into a new space.

Under the current 30+ years of leadership of Imam Faheem Shuaibe and throughout our 40+ year history we have been a stalwart in continuing the work of establishing Al-Islam in the Oakland/Bay Area community, America, and the world by spreading and practicing the life of the Qur’an, which is exemplified by our beloved Prophet Muhammad (whom revelation was sent over 1400 years ago) (may the prayers and the peace be upon him); and by also continuing to live the legacy of our late leader Imam Warith Deen Mohammed (may Allah mercy be on him) .

“Serve Allah, and join not any partners with Him; and do good to parents, family, orphans, those in need, neighbors who are near, neighbors who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer, and what your right hand posses..”

Holy Qur’an: 4;36

Our Mission

Promote peace, stability, equality, liberty and dignity within the Muslim community and within society at large; to implement the law of Al-Islam in all affairs of the Muslim community; to produce and maintain an environment which promotes the development of Islamic character in every individual, and which promotes in every individual the will to obey Allah in accordance with Islamic beliefs; to remove all obstacles to its mission; and, to carry the call of Al-Islam to the whole world.

Our Life

As Muslims, we live a life of regard for our Lord, our Guardian-Evolver. The term we use for this is “Taqwa”. It is our “taqwa”, our consciousness of The Most High’s presence in all matters that guides us to the best life. Through this “taqwa” comes our regard for our families, friends, neighbors, the living, and the natural worlds. Our lives ebb and flow as our faith and belief is maintained and strengthened by our regard for The All-Knower and All-Seer.

Our Duty

We worship The One Creator of all. Our ultimate obligation is to obey His command and to follow the life example of His last prophet, Muhammad (prayers and peace be upon him). In our commitment to fulfill this duty, we submit our whole selves with the hope that all humanity is never wanting of the mercy of The Almighty.

Al-Islam as our Way of Life

The religion of Al-Islam is the path of peace. All of the natural world worships The One and Only Creator. The way to unity and prosperity is blueprinted in the design of creation. Our goal as Muslims is to live according to this design and to invite all humanity to do the same. We live connected lives. Our humanity connects us as does our very nature. Our ultimate success depends upon our adherence to the ways of all creation, obedience to the One True Creator; we unite with humanity and the natural world to form a complete bond in order that we return to our Creator pleasing and well pleased.
